Welcome to Hit Refresh. This month, we'll be bringing you articles created by experts that will help you live your best life in 2018. Today, beauty expert Bonnie Gillies takes us through the beauty staples that should line your bathroom cupboard this year, that have maximum results and require, mostly, minimum spend.

Owning really great beauty products doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune. In fact some of my all-time favourite beauty buys cost under $20.

I trial hundreds of products each year, ranging from budget-buys to high-end products and the ones that impress me the most are often not the ones you’d expect. Regardless of price and brand, I look for products that actually work, and make your beauty routine easier.

Here are my top picks of beauty products that are actually worth investing in in 2018.

VS Sassoon Smooth and Wave, $199.95

This hair tool is a great buy for anyone who wants beautifully styled hair with minimum effort. The best part is that the VS Sassoon Smooth and Wave is a 2 in 1 tool – it’s both a hair straightener and a hair curler. If you struggle with curling your hair then you will love the Smooth and Wave function because it creates beautiful waves at the press of a button. It’s so simple.

Bioderma Photoderm BB Cream, $36.99

I am completely obsessed with this product. It is literally the best BB cream I have ever used. It gives a light coverage, adds a beautiful soft radiance to the skin, and it’s SPF 50+. I wear the Bioderma Photoderm BB Cream every single day. I wear it alone for a casual look, but if I have an event, I wear it under a heavier foundation because it not only glides onto the skin so well, but also primes it with sun protection and a beautiful glow. This product comes in two colours – light and golden. Light suits fair to medium skin tones, and the golden shade suits medium to olive skin tones.

Bioeffect Cellular Activating Serum, $195

Bioeffect’s products are 100% natural, highly active and scientifically backed skin care. Their hero Cellular Activating Serum is suitable for all skin types, and can be used both day and night on even the most sensitive skins. The serum has been scientifically proven to use the power of plants to communicate with the skin on a cellular level to mimic young, healthy skin. Within the first month of use, my skin looked smoother, more hydrated and smoother. You’d think such a powerful serum would contain loads of ingredients right? Wrong. The Bioeffect serum contains just 7 ingredients. It’s versatile and can be used in conjunction with any other skin care products or brands. For me, this serum is moisturizing enough to be used alone, however, if you have drier skin you might want to use it with your favourite moisturiser.

Goldwell StyleSign Just Smooth Soft Tamer, $25.45

If you’ve just finished styling your hair and it’s still a little frizzy, or not smooth enough, you will love this styling cream. Goldwell Soft Tamer is a lightweight styling cream which eliminates frizz without weighing down the hair. I use it to rub over my hair when I’m finished styling to smooth away frizz and fly-aways. It also acts as a barrier to protect against humidity throughout the day. Goldwell Soft Tamer is light enough that it doesn’t weigh down the hair or make it look greasy. It’s a reliable quick fix for frizz prone hair.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Cushion Stick Radiant Makeup, $58

This has been my favourite foundation for the past 6 months. Estee Lauder Double Wear Cushion Stick is a radiant medium coverage foundation that comes in a wind-up stick with a cushion on the end to blend and apply the foundation with. The formula is second to none – it’s long wearing, hydrating, and although it doesn’t get shiny, it still has a soft natural glow. This foundation looks great, application is super easy, and it’s handy to travel with as well.

Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette, $83

The Urban Decay Naked Heat Eyeshadow Palette has been a global bestseller and it’s no wonder why. This palette’s selection of warm mattes and metallics suit any skin tone and make blue, green and brown eye colours pop. The shadows are highly pigmented and super soft. Being a cool-toned girl I didn’t think this palette would suit me, but the warm peaches and rusty browns make my blue eyes look really stand out. With a dozen colours, you have plenty of shades to create a wide range of looks.
