Welcome to Hit Refresh. This month, we'll be bringing you articles created by experts that will help you live your best life in 2018. Today, beauty expert Bonnie Gillies takes us through the beauty treatments actually worth investing in.

Knowing which beauty treatments are really worth the money can be tricky thing to judge. In general, beauty treatments aren’t cheap, so when you’re willing to invest in regular hair, skin or body treatments it’s nice to know that what you’re paying for is going to give you great results.

So what is the right treatment for you? And which treatments actually work?

The treatments you will love are the ones that are perfectly suited to your age, your needs or concerns.

I’ve compiled a list of three fantastic treatments for the ladies over 30 to do regularly this year, all of which I personally love, and have seen great results from.

Skin Peels

A peel is a deep exfoliation treatment that uses light acids (usually AHA’s, BHA’s or glycolic) to gently slough off dead skin build up, and trust me they make your skin feel fresh.

Consider this: the top layer of your skin is covered in a thick layer of dead skin cells. When you exfoliate, some of that top layer of dead skin build up is removed. Salon peels are stronger than any ‘at home’ exfoliating product and this means they exfoliate away more of the dead skin build up.

Now, remember that dead skin cells are dull and dry, and in the top layer of dead skin cells is where most of the colour in pigmentation and age spots sit. So, if you regularly have deep exfoliating treatments, this will remove discolouration, dryness and dullness. Your skin will be more hydrated, lines will be less obvious, pores will be clearer and your skin will appear more radiant.

I’ve met loads of women who thought they had really dry skin, but after they started having regular peels they realised their skin wasn’t overly dry at all, they just had a lot of dead skin build up, which looked perpetually dry, and accentuated their lines. Once they had had a few facial peels their skin looked more plump and hydrated and their make-up looked better.

And I know first hand that peels work wonders on minimising pigmentation.

In salon peels come in a range of different strengths from light to intense, and the price usually increases with the intensity. Mild strength peels cause no down time at all, you look completely normal after a treatment ( but much more glowy), however the more intense peels can leave you with up to 5 days down time due to redness, possible swelling and the top layer of dead skin actually peeling of in flakey bits.

I have regular mild peels which are enough to keep my skin looking good and my pigmentation at bay. However, if you’ve never had a peel before you might want to start off with something a little stronger to get better immediate results, and then opt for the milder peels as maintenance down the track.

Facial Peels start at around the $100 mark, and my favourite is the Blueberry Peel from The Clinic, Bondi Junction which costs $150.

BHave Hair Treatments

I just happened to discover this brand last year on a recommendation from a friend. There are loads of different hair treatments available in salons, almost to the point where even I find it confusing! But this particular brand offers hair treatments that work really well.

Bhave have two hero treatments ‘Rescue’ and ‘Smooth’ which will leave your hair feeling amazing for months on end!

1. Smooth

I regularly have the ‘Smooth’ treatment which uses keratin technology to make the hair more manageable and smoother with zero frizz. My hair is naturally curly and frizzy, and it’s a dream to be able to let my hair dry naturally and it actually look okay. Especially during summer. My hair doesn’t get affected by humidity at all, and I can swim in the ocean without the associated frizz. This treatment is not a straightening treatment, it doesn’t remove the curl, it makes hair more manageable and almost completely removes frizz. And for me, it cuts styling time in half.

2. Rescue

The Bhave Rescue treatment miraculously reverses any signs of damage in your hair. It restores hair health, and gives you beautiful shiny, healthy looking hair by using bio active keratin. And no this is not another keratin straightening treatment… in fact there is absolutely no straightening involved.

It reverses damage from colouring, heated styling, bleach and chemical straightening, and it repairs split ends and adds loads of shine. This one is great for those who don’t have frizzy hair, but just want healthier, shinier looking hair.

Both treatments take a couple of hours in the salon. Post treatment you can’t wash your hair for 48 hours. The results last for 3 – 4 months. You can find your nearest salon that offers Bhave treatments here.

Body Masks

Just like using a mask for your face, body masks can offer a multitude of benefits for the skin on your body.

Body masks can be used to draw out impurities, exfoliate, increase circulation, firm and smooth bumpy skin. Many salons offer body masks during their in salon treatments, you can have them alone or in combination with a massage and body scrub. For me this is my ultimate indulgence, whenever I get some spare time without work or kids (which isn’t very often) I book in some spa time for a body treatment.

My favourites are…

Endota Spa- Detox Body Mask is a clay body mask which is designed to draw out impurities and blockages in the skin. It costs $140 and includes the body mask, a massage and dry body brushing.

Ella Bache- Earth Enzyme Exfoliating Body Mask uses Papaya enzyme and oat bran to remove dead skin, smooth out bumpy skin, and makes the skin look more radiant. $59.

The Darling Spa (if I’m feeling really indulgent) for a Moroccan Mud body treatment. This treatment is simply divine. It’s done in a heated room called the ‘moroccan hammam’, where you lay on a warm marble table while you are wrapped in a warm clay and rosewater mask. This treatment leaves you feeling relaxed and floaty with incredibly smooth and supple skin, and costs $210.
