These are the three most common skin problems – solved.

Rosacea

Characterised by redness and dilated capillaries, it can form a rash around the nose and cheeks. Triggers are extreme weather, alcohol, stress and spicy foods.

Eat this: Salmon. The high omega-3 content makes it a great anti-inflammatory. Have it twice a week.

Try this: LED (light emitting diode) therapy. It's a non-invasive treatment that reduces redness, inflammation and infection. Expect to pay $50-$100 per weekly session, with six to 10 required depending on your condition.

Take this: Zinc supplement. It's a vital mineral for skin healing. Consult your health practitioner for the best dose but in most cases 20-25mg a day is ideal

Apply this: Sea buckthorn oil. This is extremely soothing, healing and nourishing for the skin. It also possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Try Aspect Red-Less 21 ($99, adorebeauty.com.au).

Ageing and pigmentation

This will generally appear as toughened skin, enlarged pores, fine lines and deeper wrinkles. Discolouration may also be present, most commonly around the eyes.

Eat this: Pomegranates. Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, these help to fight free radicals. Eat daily or enjoy as a juice.

Try this: Vitamin A peel. Applied like a mask, it reduces fine lines and wrinkles as well as resulting in a smoother texture. Treatments cost $180-$250 per session and you can expect to get results after four sessions.

Take this: Resveratrol, an antioxidant found in red grapes and dark chocolate, protects skin from the sun and pollution. As a supplement 300mg daily is a safe dose, but talk to a health practitioner first.

Apply this: Vitamin C. It can help to fade pigmentation and plump the skin through antioxidant properties. Try Ultraceuticals Ultra C23+ Firming Concentrate ($138, ultraceuticals.com.au), and use it in conjunction with sunscreen.

Acne

Raised white-yellow blemishes and blackheads. It's caused by blocked or infected sebaceous glands and is linked to hormone levels, diet and stress.

Eat this: Broccoli. It promotes healthy digestion and toxin flushing, which support skin health. Have one cup a day.

Try this: A peel with AHA & BHA (alpha and beta hydroxy acid). It exfoliates top layers of skin, stimulates new cell turnover, decongests pores and regulates oil secretion. Costs $100-$200 per session with results usually after six.

Take this: Probiotic supplement. This will rebalance the gut microbiome and boost immunity. Try Lactobacillus acidophilus but check with your health practitioner first.

Apply this: Colloidal silver, a natural antibiotic that supports infected skin. Saturate a cotton pad in it and apply to affected skin daily. Try Fulhealth Industries Silver Colloid ($29.99, aksorganics.com.au).
