In Australia 1 in 10 women suffer from endometriosis and there is currently no known cure.

According to Endometriosis Australia, “endometriosis is present when the tissue that is similar to the lining of the uterus (womb) occurs outside this layer and causes pain and/or infertility.”

The only way to diagnosis it is to undergo a laparoscopy.

While there are some medical and surgical treatments available to ease the symptoms, some women also turn to homeopathy to manage the pain, and according to new research from Iran, this could be effective.

In a new study, published in the Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, researchers from Iran looked at whether curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, can reduce inflammation and pain and inhibit the disease progression of endometriosis.

They discovered, by reviewing in-vitro and animal studies, that curcumin can in fact reduce inflammation by suppressing inflammatory cytokine expression. Furthermore, there is some evidence that curcumin may reduce the disease progression by inhibiting the invasion, attachment, and angiogenesis of endometrial lesions.

While the studies were limited and more research needs to be done, turmeric is generally considered safe (and inexpensive) to use, so upping it in your cooking or ordering a turmeric latte may help ease some pain.
