When it comes to celebrity diets they’re usually pretty out there. Just ask Kourtney Kardashian or Gwyneth Paltrow, who have championed a lot of less-than-scientifically-proved, nuanced eating programs. Or take a look at the nineties as a general decade – cabbage soup, Cayenne pepper, and Atkins diets, we’re looking at you.

However Snapchat-queen Kylie Jenner and newly-sober Miley Cyrus are going for something a little more natural and a lot more lifestyle choice. Both rich-list Millennials have revealed they follow the vegan diet, with Miley even recently getting a new tattoo that would make PETA proud.

If you’ve been living under a rock, the vegan diet, which used to be for poor uni students, yoga instructors, and people who would have no problem naming their child ‘Apple’, has gone mainstream.

In fact, data from market researcher Euromonitor International has shown Australia's vegan food market is currently worth almost $136 million, set to reach $215 million by 2020. Bye meat and three veg.

Here’s a refresher for you: eating vegan is when you only consume food that doesn’t use any animal products – meaning no meat, eggs, dairy, and other animal-derived additives, like honey. It’s also called the plant-based diet.

This lifestyle is mostly followed for animal-friendly ethical reasons, but in recent years, it’s also been linked to weight loss, a study in the Journal of General Internal Medicine shows. Researchers found that eating a diet high in vegetables, legumes, and complex carbs means your intake stays pretty lean with a lot of vitamins and minerals. (Vegetarians who allowed themselves eggs and diary still fared well, FYI).

For new age hippie Miley and her seven dogs (and countless other pets, she’s basically living in a home-grown zoo) it’s obvious why she’s made the choice, making it official in 2014. She’ll often Instagram about her animal activism, too.

While for Kylie Jenner, it seems her diet is more of a recent choice.

“I’m trying this whole vegan thing,” she recently wrote on a Snapchat photo of vegan tacos, salsa and a smoothie.

While this sounds like a pretty flippant way to go about such a restrictive ethical diet, it’s obvious that Jenner is also an animal lover. She currently has three Italian greyhounds (Norman, Bambi and Sophia), one dachshund (Ernie) and unknown cross-breed Penny (who is oh-so-cute).

If you’re considering trying the vegan diet yourself, make sure to get help from your GP or a dietitian.
