How Wilda Fox lost extra baby weight from the comfort of her own home.

"Not only had I lost nearly 28kg, I was fitter and more toned than I’d ever been"

Like many women, Wilda Fox, now 28, wasn't happy with her post-baby body. So she worked out a way to shed weight, tone up and get fit from home – all in between her baby's naps!

I'd always been into fitness, exercise and nutrition but as a lot of mums can probably relate to, many things in your body and life unexpectedly change when you become pregnant.

In January 2016 I was thrilled to discover that my husband Matt and I were expecting our first baby.

I was feeling fantastic at the beginning of my pregnancy and had big plans to continue my regular gym workouts five times a week throughout the next 8 months, wanting to stay as fit as possible and minimise gaining any extra baby weight.

However, dreaded nausea inevitably soon kicked in, tiredness overtook my body, and before long I lost all motivation to continue my exercise routine.

Want Beyonce’s post-baby body? Maybe you should take a breath and take your time. Your first few months of motherhood is not the time for a crash diet.

By the second trimester I quit my gym membership for the first time in my adult life. I just couldn't face those big, daunting machines anymore and spending my spare time sleeping seemed much more appealing than strenuous cardio workouts!

I also worried continuing training with heavy weights could be harmful to my body carrying my growing baby.

Once my nausea eased and I started to regain a bit more energy, I asked Matt for some exercise advice. As a former professional athlete turned personal trainer, he knew a lot about fitness. He suggested rather than returning to the gym, I should make the most of every day incidental exercise activities – like going for longer walks or taking the stairs when I could instead of lifts.

He also recommended little workouts at home when I felt up to it.

So over the following months I tried to incorporate as much walking and home workouts into my life as possible. I did exercises like squats and lunges in front of the TV, and even made the most of mundane chores like vacuuming and mopping to ensure I stayed active.

But I never overdid it – if I was tired I listened to my body and rested. Although I generally maintained a nutritious diet I also never restricted myself – often giving into naughty pregnancy cravings!

My son Harley was born in November 2016 and holding him for the first time was the most amazing moment of my life. I was immediately in love and spent the next couple weeks basically staring at him in awe.

Combined with his weight and the loss of fluid retention, etc. after the birth I automatically lost around 5kg in that first couple of weeks.

However, I was still 15 -20kg over my ideal weight.

Harley was, of course, my number one priority, but – like many women – I just wasn't happy with my post-baby body.

It's not easy looking into the mirror and not liking the reflection staring back at you. I'd put on weight, my body had changed, I was no longer toned, and hated the extra flabbiness around my tummy.

Of course, raising my newborn was first and foremost, but I also wanted to find a way to slowly lose weight and bounce back into shape.

I chatted with Matt about my weight and body goals.

We sat down together and worked out an exercise plan to suit me and my new lifestyle as a stay-at-home mum.

As my motivation for the gym had completely plummeted, and I now didn't have the time or freedom for it anyway, we worked out exercises I could do with Harley while he was awake, or in between his naps from the comfort of our own home.

My exercise plan included things like:

– Circuit workouts while Harley napped – combining sets of squat, lunges, dips, push-ups and planks.

– Using the couch or a chair to do step-ups and squats.

– Being extra energetic while completing housework. Scrubbing shower screens and cleaning windows is a great arm workout!

– Going on daily walks together as a family, which was also a wonderful time to bond while burning calories.

I did as much as I could every day and after just a few weeks the results already started to show!

I then slowly built up my exercise duration every week, continuing to incorporate my daily workouts into Harley's nap times.
