During her recent pregnancy, actor Katherine Heigl put on over 20 kilos (50 pounds).

“… I’m not gonna lie, I had moments of sheer panic that I’d never be able to lose it all,” Katherine wrote in a new post on her blog, Those Heavenly Days.

But, in the seven months since giving birth to her baby boy, Joshua Junior, she has managed to “slowly but surely” drop her pregnancy weight – with only 10 pounds (4.5 kilos) left to go.

To slim down, Heigl embraced low-calorie meals along with regular exercise, but her favourite tip may surprise you.

“My best weight loss advice is to start every morning by saying out loud a positive mantra of your choice about your body.

“Mine is ‘I am easily, with good health, inspiration, grace and gratitude losing weight faster than I can even imagine with harm to none’.”

After repeating her mantra, Heigl then says what she’s grateful for. She thanks her body for its “perfect health, strength, limberness, vibrancy, youthfulness and beauty”.

“Whether I always believe these things about myself and my body or not, I say them.

“By saying them out loud with love and gratitude I have found that I not only start to believe them, but my body exhibits what I say and believe.”

Heigl admits that mantras and positive intentions “aren’t magic”. After saying her mantra and positive intentions she still has to do the work. That’s why she sets aside time to prepare and eat healthy, low-calorie foods, aims to sleep well and exercises three days a week.

“The difference I’ve found in doing the work with a loving and positive attitude versus an anxious, frustrated and negative one is that the weight really does seem to just fall away with less struggle.”

So could embracing a mantra help you drop kilos too?

Sports psychologist Dr Joann Lukins from Peak Performance Psychology believes it can. She explains that a mantra is simply a repetitive belief or message that you tell yourself.

A mantra can help you achieve your goals by ensuring you practice the desired behaviour (such as saying no to that cupcake). It can also help remind you why you’re making a particular decision in the first place. The best bit is that mantras really work, says Dr Lukins, who practices them herself.

“Repeating selected words or phrases helps direct your thinking away from negative distracting thoughts and towards a more powerful and positive mindset.”

Dr Lukins says your mantra can relate to any part of your health journey. If your aim is to lose weight, you could adopt a simple mantra such as, “I choose the healthy option”.

That way, whenever you’re faced with temptation you just need to repeat that and let it guide your culinary decisions.

Your mantra could also help you achieve your fitness goals. When you’re hitting a wall in your workout, for instance, your mantra could be something along the lines of, “Think strong, be strong”.

If you’re a runner, you could remind yourself that with each step you take, “The finish is closer”.

You can either say your mantra to yourself in your head, or out loud. If you’re happy to silently say it, by all means go ahead. However, Dr Lukins says saying it out loud can help you stay even more focused.

You can also keep visual reminders of your mantra. If your mantra is food related, stick it on your fridge. Or if it relates to exercise, have it written down in your gym bag or even on your water bottle.

As Heigl noted, the mantra can’t do the work for you. But it can certainly steer you in the right direction. Heigl is proof of that.

As she says, “… Instead of weight loss being a terrible, frustrating burden and battle, it’s become more of a lifestyle of healthy choices I make to show my body the love it deserves.”

So the only question now is: What will your mantra be?
